Startup Weekend Busan is a yearly hackathon event where teams have roughly 60 hours to pitch and present a prototype for a new tech start up. In 2016 I participated together with a team of five other peers. Our team included an entrepreneur, 3 developers, and 2 designer/front-end developers. My role was one of the designer/front-end developers.

Deliverables and Tools

Deliverables: logo, visual identity, UI design, front-end development, and back-end development to create a working prototype. Our team worked collaboratively, but to create a successful prototype we all leveraged our strengths. I mainly worked on the visual identity and front-end development.

Tools I used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, HTML, CSS

Challenge

Our team's pitch was to create an app that allowed users to create, access, and share personalized maps with other users using the Google Maps API. Shared maps could include restaurants, stores and other points of interest. The target markets were travellers to Busan, and the expat community as well.

Keywords: vibrant, engaging, adventurous

Solution

Along with my designer teammate, we started our design process by experimenting with color palettes. We then created a logo for the startup. Finally, we created a web design using a wireframe. The next step was to code the front-end of the app using the designs we came up with and to integrate that with the work our back-end developers coded.

After roughly 60 hours of designing and coding, we presented our prototype to the judges and won the hackathon. It was a really proud moment for us! Even though we were running on little sleep, and copious amounts of caffeine, we made sure to celebrate the victory.
